This week in LA 8 (Sept. 14-18)

This week in ELA Grade Eight –

  • We finished reading the short story – “The Beautiful People” – thank you to our fantastic student voice actors, bravo!
  • Listened to and discussed the theme of ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ using Tom Waits’ song – “Hold On” (lyrics)| Video – “Hold On
  • Began our discussion of literary devices and literal/figurative meaning in texts, song, puns, and memes from the Internet
  • We watched an episode of the “Twilight Zone” – “The Eye of the Beholder” (sorry, the old video is only available on iTunes not YouTube)
  • Discussed the influence of bias, stereotype, and misogyny in the media using a CBC/Twitter/NYTimes example of the lack of sports content about women in published sources (attached below) – less than 4% of content, a ten word entry on the front page of the sports section of the NYTimes, and the imbalance in coverage for 50-51% of the population

Quotes for our early discussions of the theme of beauty:

  • “Beauty is bought by the judgment of the eye” – William Shakespeare
  • “Beauty, like supreme dominion, Is but supported by opinion” – Ben Franklin
  • “Beauty in things exists merely in the mind which contemplates them.” – David Hume (philosoper)
  • Beauty is in the eye of the beholder – modern idiom or phrase
